about us

We met each other 1997 in Zambia. Heleen was working in the capital at the university at the Computer Centre. Michel worked far out in the bush as a science teacher on a secondary school. Coming back to Netherlands in 1999/2000 we both worked in ICT. From some time we were looking for a nice place to return to live and work in Africa.

After a holiday in Uganda in September 2009 we fell in love with Fort Portal in Uganda and decided to move in June 2010. Our ideas are to make ‘Fair Trade’ cheese on small scale, set up a lunchroom/internet cafe and explore possibilities to improve science teaching in secondary schools. In the mean time Heleen will be leading a couple of tours with groups of Dutch tourists. In 2010 we bought property to set up a restaurant and guesthouse. The initial idea of starting small failed with this property. A renovation of 1,5 year started. In 2011 we took over the only pizzeria in Fort Portal Uganda. In 2012 Dutchess opened. First as a restaurant later that year the guesthouse opened.
